HUBER HPS Packaged Dryer

Plug and Play Drying Technology for Small to Medium Treatment Plants

The HPS dryer is delivered to site as a containerised plug and play solution which reduces site integration costs, does away with the need for buildings, and reduces offsite disposal costs of sludge due to the 70 – 75% volume reduction, which also lowers the carbon emissions associated with road transport.

Integrated items include the drying system, fans, heat pump and controls. Hydroflux can manage all aspects of site installation, for complete process, mechanical and electrical integration. This includes operational and service models to provide continuous customer support.

  • Complete plug and play solution – fast installation times with simple integration
  • Proven technology – reliable performance and long term operation
  • Sludge Volume Reduction – reduced disposal costs and associated carbon emissions
  • Project delivery flexibility – Design Build model provides single point accountability
  • Operational Services – flexible tailored service and operation agreements

HPS System Overview

The process runs continuously in a closed loop.

  • Evaporator: Moist air from the dryer flows over the heat exchanger, causing the refrigerant to evaporate.
  • Compressor: The refrigerant is compressed, causing the pressure and temperature to rise.
  • Condenser: Here, energy is released again, heating the process air for drying.
  • Expansion valve: The refrigerant expands via the valve and is regulated to a constant, defined superheat after the evaporator.

The drying process ‒ step by step

  • The sludge is fed onto the drying belts. The sewage sludge is evenly applied to perforated conveyor belts.
  • The sludge dries on the belts. Water evaporates by convection.
  • Cooling and condensation. The moist air is condensed by passing through heat exchangers.
  • The air flow is heated. The air is heated by the liquefaction of the refrigerant.
  • A recirculation fan compensates for pressure loss. Warm, dry air is directed to the belts.

The HPS is available in five different sizes. Capacities range from 600 to 3000 t/a of sludge cake. The capacity is dependant upon the sludge quality, which includes the dryness and volatile suspended solids.
