Screenings Handling

Wash Presses for Efficient Screenings Handling in Wastewater Treatment

Hydroflux Epco partners with HUBER Technology to offer advanced wash presses, significantly enhancing screenings handling efficiency in municipal wastewater treatment plants across Australia and New Zealand. The HUBER WAP® and WAP SL wash presses deliver superior washing, compaction, and dewatering performance, resulting in substantial reductions in screenings volume, odour, and disposal costs. Key benefits of wash presses include:

  • Sturdy, durable design constructed entirely of stainless steel.
  • Dewatering performance up to 45% dry solids (DS)
  • Weight reduction of screenings by up to 75% (and up to 85% with WAP SL Wash Press)
  • Screenings handling capacity of up to 12 m³/h
  • WAP SL offers high washed screenings quality.

Engineered in Germany and trusted worldwide, these systems ensure reliable operation, low maintenance, and compliance with environmental standards. Combined with Hydroflux Epco’s local expertise with over 50 units installed across Australia and New Zealand, HUBER wash presses provide an optimal solution for sustainable and efficient wastewater screening management.

Screenings are discharged directly from a screen or conveyor into the feed trough of the HUBER Wash Press. A durable conveying and compacting screw transports the screenings to the wash zone, where powerful turbulence generated by automatic wash water injection effectively separates organic particles, ensuring thorough screenings washing.

The washing intensity and cycles can be customised to meet specific needs. The washed screenings are then transported through a rising pipe to the press zone, where they are compressed and dewatered by the compacting screw to achieve a dry solids content of 35-45%.

Wash water, rich in carbon, is returned to the wastewater stream, with an option for automatic cleaning of the wash water collection tank. The washed and compacted screenings are finally discharged through a conical pipe into a skip.

For enhanced maintenance efficiency, all machine sizes rated from 2 m3/hr – 12 m3/hr are equipped with wear detection sensors in the press zone, enabling automated identification of the optimal time for auger maintenance.

The HUBER Super Launder Wash Press (WAP SL) is engineered to substantially reduce screenings volume, weight, and disposal costs by up to 85%, with compaction rates of up to 50% dry residue (DR). This advanced system ensures high-quality washed screenings with a BOD5 content of less than 20 mg per gram of DR, offering additional savings in disposal costs compared to traditional wash press systems. Unlike the standard HUBER WAP, which operates with a continuous feed system, the WAP SL utilises a batch process, allowing for more thorough washing and higher reductions in organic content, weight, and volume.

Operating in batch mode, the WAP SL receives screenings directly from a screen, conveyor, or through a launder channel. Once a batch is fed into the wash press trough, it is filled with wash water and agitated by an impeller for a set period. The intense turbulence and shear generated during this process effectively loosen and remove fecal matter from the screenings. This advanced washing process, along with its batch operation, sets the WAP® SL apart from the standard WAP, providing more efficient and hygienic screenings handling for wastewater treatment plants.

Hydroflux Epco’s engineers work closely with clients, contractors, and consultants to develop tailored screening and screening handling solutions. Comprehensive design documentation is prepared, including process flow diagrams, equipment layouts, performance specifications, and integration plans for existing facilities and utility requirements. Careful consideration is also given to the handling, storage, and disposal of the screened material to ensure operational efficiency and compliance.

Our team of experts understands the complexities of screening processes and will always provide tailored advice on selecting, designing, and optimising the correct screening systems in each case.
