Combining DAF Design and Chemical Expertise for Aquaculture Treatment

April 30, 2026

Hydroflux recently supplied two specialised HyDAF Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems for fish processing sites in New Zealand and Tasmania. While both systems treat high-strength wastewater from aquaculture processing, each was designed to suit the specific conditions and operational requirements of the site.

Aquaculture wastewater presents unique treatment challenges, particularly due to its high salinity and occasional elevated oil and grease content. High salinity can significantly affect flocculant performance, making the selection and optimisation of the flocculant program critical to achieving effective solids separation and overall treatment performance.

Hydroflux’s capability as a specialist flocculant blender is central to achieving reliable outcomes in these applications. Customised flocculant formulations were developed for each site, matched to the wastewater characteristics to maximise solids separation and ensure stable, consistent operation of the HyDAF systems.

In New Zealand, a salmon processor generates a high-strength saline wastewater requiring efficient suspended solids removal, with the aim of capturing solids for beneficial reuse. A HyDAF unit, designed for the marine environment, was installed on a platform to allow residuals to flow by gravity for collection, eliminating the need for additional by-product handling systems. Local fabrication in New Zealand also reduced delivery timeframes and capital costs.

In Tasmania, the rendering of salmon waste produces a similarly high-strength wastewater stream. A HyDAF unit was provided as the core separation technology and integrated into a skid-mounted system to simplify installation and commissioning.

These projects demonstrate the importance of combining proven DAF technology with tailored chemical programs to deliver reliable wastewater treatment performance in demanding aquaculture applications.
