Achieving Tighter Limits for Pond-Based Treatment Systems with HySmart®

March 26, 2024

Across Australia and New Zealand aerated wastewater ponds are used by industrial manufacturers to provide a level of treatment that typically targets suspended solids and organic removal (BOD5). The process is generally easy to operate and maintain.

But what happens when a tighter limit is required?

Hydroflux has expertise in retrofitting and upgrading any pond or lagoon based wastewater treatment plant to improve organics and nutrient removal.

Hydroflux recently completed the upgrade of a pond-based treatment system for a food and beverage processor to include treatment to achieve significantly higher levels of suspended solids, BOD5, phosphorous and nitrogen removal.

Project Highlights

  • Capacity upgrade by 20% to 2.3MLD
  • Total Nitrogen Limit revised to 15 mg/L
  • Total Phosphorous Limit revised to 2 mg/L
  • Wastewater characterization to determine process design
  • All the guaranteed discharge limits were met (BOD, TSS, TP and TN)

Process Summary

  • Conversion of the process to include anoxic and aerobic zones within the ponds
  • Incorporation of floating surface aerators to the aerobic zone
  • Addition of a final stage HySmart® Activated Sludge Process
  • Secondary and tertiary treatment using HyDAF technology
  • Sludge management using HySludge® technology
  • Automatic control system and remote monitoring HyConnect®
  • Process instrumentation and flow monitoring
Additional HySmart® Activated Sludge Process can ensure very low nutrient levels in the treated wastewater.
