East Rockingham WRRF – Strainpress® Cleans Thickened Sludge Stream
August 11, 2026
The East Rockingham WRRF treats up to 20 million litres per day of sewage to a high standard with discharge via the Sepia Depression Outlet Landline.
A recent upgrade has increased capacity to 30 million litres per day. As part of the works, Hydroflux provided a set of HUBER Strainpress® Sludge Screens, which removes screenings, plastics and other debris from the thickened waste activated sludge stream, which is ultimately transported to the Woodman Pt WRRF for further processing.

General Data
- Two HUBER SP290 Strainpress® Sludge Screens
- Processing up to 40,000 per hour of thickened waste activated sludge
- Inline pressurised screening system with integrated screenings compaction
- Self-regulating against varying feed solids
- Removes approx. 1 to 3L of screenings per 1000L of sludge processed
Benefits
- Removes debris, plastics, fine screenings and cotton bud sticks from sludge
- Protect digesters from screenings accumulation
- Automatic operation
- Well proven across Australia and New Zealand with ten references, several in operation for over 15 years, and over 3000 worldwide

Strainpress® is an inline sludge screen that has been specifically designed to remove fine screenings from primary and secondary sludge. It can be installed in a closed loop system as it can operate under pressure. Typical applications include installation upstream of anaerobic digesters and thermal hydrolysis processes, upstream of advanced thermal treatment processes and within waste to energy plants.
